Well, nobody really mass-produces bikes in the US anymore because it's cheaper to do it overseas. This is true for all of the big manufacturers save for a few of their high end frames, but the price difference is not great overal when you look at the entire package and the fact that 99% of all the components are also manufacturered in taiwain or whatever. Does it really make a differnece that the frame was manufacturered in one place when every other part comes from overseas? It makes the "I'll only buy USA" argument pretty moot.

I'd wager that the biggest reason a few of the major manufacturers (like trek) still produce a couple high end frames in the US is because of time, and nothing else. They can make changes to the frames and get them built on their own schedule, rather than the schedule of an overseas supplier that is going to make a "batch" of frames and do something else untill enough orders come in to make another "batch". There aren't enough of these bikes/frames sold to justify a full time production line, and these are bikes that are usually within the "race" program, so being able to make changes to them in a timely manner also helps.

The bottom line is that it's cheaper to mass produce a frame overseas for the same amount of quality. Not by a huge amount compared to the complete cost of the bike, but enough to make it a sure shot for consumers that will always pick the cheaper bike that's speced with the same equipment.

Quality wise, the asian manufacturers can make whatever you want. If you pay them to make crap, that's what they'll make. If you have higher standards and will pay for them, they'll make bikes to much higher standards. There's no "rule" about what kind of quality comes from what country, it depends on what the manufacturer is paying for.
